30,000 credit cards cancelled

More than 8,000 credit cards issued through the Commonwealth Bank and about 23,000 Bendigo Bank cards had been cancelled and reissued by late yesterday after the discovery of suspect transactions involving an unnamed retailer.

Westpac and its St George subsidiary had also cancelled and reissued “a small number of cards” - believed to be fewer than 1,000 - as had National Australia Bank. ANZ had not reported any cancellations.

The banks said customers would not be liable for any stolen funds or fees incurred as a result of the card cancellations.

But the cancellation left thousands without credit cards, and was set to cause disruption for people with automatic bill payments linked to their cards.

Sources said the retailer involved in the security breach was a client of St George. The bank declined to comment.
