Family relationships rule the finances

05/01/2012

The most popular New Year's resolution, according to the FranklinCovey Group, is "improve my financial situation". In most relationships, there's the person who sweats the small stuff and the big-picture person who thinks everything is A-OK if the car is in the garage and the TV is still in the living room. Now, that may be normal, but it's not the way to get rich.

You should sit together at the kitchen table, with a pen and a piece of paper, and work out where every dollar is going, then save as many as possible as quickly as possible. From there you should set up separate high-interest online savings "buckets" where you can deposit small amounts of money towards different savings goals. What you don't see, you don't spend.
