How to protect yourself against online fraud

1. Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust.

2. Don't give out your personal, credit card or online account details over the phone unless you made the call and know the number came from a trusted source.

3. Don't open suspicious emails. Banks never ask for details via email. Report spam to the Australian Communications and Media Authority or delete it.

4. Never click on links in a spam email or open any files attached to them.

5. Never call a telephone number that you see in a spam email or SMS.

6. If you want to access an internet account website, use a bookmarked link or type the address in yourself.

7. Check the website address carefully. Scammers often set up fake websites with very similar addresses.

8. Never enter your personal, credit card or online account information on a website if you are not certain it is genuine.

9. Never send your personal, credit card or online account details via email.

10. Apply the latest security updates to your computer.

11. Install up-to-date anti-virus software.
