Housing starts plummet

Housing starts fell 7 per cent last financial year and 4.7 per cent in the three months to June 30 according to figures released yesterday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Residential building starts in the Northern Territory fell a massive 69.4 per cent for the quarter, followed by NSW at 20.1 per cent, Queensland 16.3 per cent, Tasmania 14.3 per cent and Western Australia 1.3 per cent.

It was a brighter picture elsewhere, with building starts rising 30 per cent in the ACT, 6.8 per cent in Victoria and 4.5 per cent in South Australia for the June quarter.
