Small lenders take a bite from big four

10/01/2012

Smaller mortgage lenders are snatching a greater share of the home loan market, according to big mortgage broker AFG.

Non-bank lenders secured nearly a quarter of the overall mortgage market in December 2011, up from 20 per cent in November.

Driving the shift was a spike in the number of borrowers refinancing home loans with a non-bank lender. By the end of 2011, non-bank lenders had lifted their share of the refinancing market to 28 per cent from 21 per cent.

They also remained attractive to first-home buyers, with 28 per cent of that market shunning the big four.
