February rate cut still on the cards

17/01/2012

New inflation and employment figures drive the case for another cut in the official cash rate when the Reserve Bank board meets next month, analysts say.

The number of mortgages approved in November increased 1.4 per cent to almost 47,000, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Separate research showed prices climbed 0.5 per cent in December, driven by strong rises in the cost of holiday travel and accommodation, alcohol and tobacco.

Unemployment is also set to rise this year, with ANZ's closely watched job advertising index showing that the number of job advertisements on the internet and in newspapers fell 0.9 per cent in December compared with the previous month.
