23/07/2010

59 per cent of voters support a tax on bank super profits similar to the Government's proposal for a tax on mining gains, a Galaxy survey has found. 28 per cent opposed the idea and 13 per cent had no view. In the 2009 financial year, Westpac, Commonwealth, NBA and ANZ made underlying profits that represented a 29 per cent return before tax. 71 per cent of Labor voters backed the bank super tax, 47 per cent of Coalition voters did.
