Credit Unions and building societies head the list of the cheapest personal secured and unsecured loans with rates ranging from 5.34 per cent to 7.75 per cent

NAB’s tertiary student loan is the cheapest loan offered by a big bank at 9.73 per cent.

Rates on personal loans have not fallen over the last year while standard variable mortgage rates fell almost four per cent.

The average rate on a secured variable personal loan from a bank is 11.43 per cent, up 0.77 per cent over the 14 months. The average rate on an unsecured variable personal loan from a bank is 13.89 per cent, up 0.16 per cent.

The average rate on a secured variable personal loan from a credit union or building society is 9.42 per cent according to Infochoice, up 0.07 per cent. The average rate on an unsecured variable personal loan from a credit union or building society is 12.53 per cent, up 0.36 per cent.
