50% of Aussies own a mobile

According to recently released industry figures, 50 per cent of Australians now own a mobile phone. Analysts believe that cheaper contracts and pre-paid packages at less than $100 are factors in the large uptake of mobiles in Australia. The popularity of mobile phones as fashion accessories amongst the youth market, and the growing trend for parents to supply their kids with mobiles for security reasons has also increased growth in the mobile market. This is similar to trends in other high mobile usage countries such as Finland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Hong Kong. Australia is estimated to be in the top 10 countries for mobile phone use on a per capita basis.
