800,000 heavily indebted

Around 800,000 of Australia's 2.5 million households have a mortgage that requires more than 20 per cent of their gross income to meet repayments. Of those, 350,000 households, require more than 30 per cent of gross income to meet their payments. The bulk of those with the highest mortgage commitments live in Sydney, the regional market in which retail spending may be most severely affected.
