Ansett lifts full economy fares

Ansett has raised its full economy domestic fares by 5 to 6 per cent, a move that has not yet been matched by Qantas.

For example, Ansett's Melbourne-Sydney one-way full economy fare has risen from $330 to $349.50 while the equivalent Qantas fare remains at $330. Virgin Blue's fully-flexible fare is $184.

Ansett has not moved advance-purchase fares or discount fares, however, a special offer for travel in September which has one-way fares as low as $66 on east coast routes and $198 from the east coast to Perth or Darwin finishes today.

History suggests Qantas will soon move to adjust full economy fares upward to the same price as Ansett, but given the more competitive market these days it may be that Qantas tries to hold fares down.
