ATM safety boost for Victoria

The Victorian Government will finally legislate to introduce ATM safety measures it promised over four years ago. The Police Minister will tell the Australian Bankers' Association today that if it doesn't agree with the terms they will be made law. Banks will be required to trial surveillance monitors on high-risk ATMs and consider the positioning, lighting and landscaping of machine locations. Before the 1999 state election, Labor promised to legislate for security cameras at all ATMs. Last year there were about 40 criminal acts at ATMs in Victoria.
