Australia falling behind on smart cards

There are currently no technical or logistical barriers to the roll out of contactless micropayment systems or even chip based cards, just the lack of an irresistible business case. Michael Sprague from the Keane Australia Micropayment Consortium – which has the contract to replace the public transport ticketing system in Victoria from 2007 – said privacy would be a key issue for the technology to confront. He painted a gloomy picture on the matter of convergence and interoperability.
