Banking and health favoured by shifts in household spending

Housing costs and medical care are the two sectors of household spending growing most quickly, the latest five-yearly survey of household expenditure patterns by the Bureau of Statistics shows. The bureau said spending on other household services, such as maintenance, cleaning and gardening, and energy costs, were the other categories of household spending to grow by more than the average over the last five years. Household spending on clothing, alcohol, transport, food and furniture all increased by less than average, in some cases because production or import costs are much lower.
