Coles looks at selling petrol

Coles Myer is considering moving into petrol retailing as part of the overhaul of its customer loyalty programs, according to its chairman Stan Wallis, though it's just one of several options being considered at this stage. Coles Myer has had links with Shell since 1994 as part of the Fly Buys program, of which the National Australia Bank is also a foundation member. The Fly Buys program is Australia's No 1 loyalty program, with more than 2 million households collecting points.

There are almost 1,500 Shell petrol stations across Australia. Shell spokesman Vincent Cosgrove declined to comment on the prospect of co-branded petrol stations sporting both the Coles Myer and Shell banners, but he did say that the group “is always looking for options to increase the services to our customers”.
Rival retailer Woolworths already operates about 220 petrol stations under the Petrol Plus banner, offering discounts on fuel to its grocery shoppers.
