Competition Tribunal revokes Cabcharge powers
The Australian Competition Tribunal revoked the authorisation granted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission that allowed taxi companies to compel drivers to accept Cabcharge payments cards and vouchers, as well as using Cabcharge-provided payment terminals. The ACT's decision applies to 11 taxi networks across Australia. The ACT reconsidered the authorisation following the application of a group of Sydney taxi drivers promoting alternative payments products such as Cabbie Express. The ruling may also be favourable for the Macquarie Bank Lime taxi business that expects to start trading in Sydney next month with 60 cabs.
