Credit card surcharge at a trickle
The Reserve Bank says an increasing number of businesses are electing to impose a surcharge on credit card users, however, the majority are not doing so. To date only one major company, Qantas, has chosen to impose a fee. The RBA's changes to credit card payment system removed restrictions imposed by card issuers on merchants to charge higher prices to credit customers. The RBA also emphasised that ASIC is responsible for seeing that merchants planning to introduce the surcharge provide customers with required information.
