Debt traps workers in 50 hour weeks

A University of Melbourne study found that 23 per cent of all workers are putting in at least 50 hours a week. The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research says 12.5 per cent are “volunteers” for long hours while 10.3 per cent are “conscripts”. The study's authors said both conscripts and volunteers are trapped in what the study calls the work-and-spend cycle, often to meet the debt repayments tied to their consumerist lifestyle.
