Don’t use birthdays for PIN numbers
A New Zealand woman has been left more than $8,000 out of pocket after thieves stole her wallet and used her Eftpos card to go on a spending spree. The bank – Westpac refused to repay the woman the lost funds because her PIN number was too easy for the thieves to guess.
The woman, Kay Heel, says she believes the thief managed to work out her banking PIN numbers from the date of birth details on her driver's licence. The banking ombudsman ruled the terms and conditions of the use of her card had been breached because the pin number for her Westpac card was too easy to guess.
Ms Heel admits to signing a terms and conditions agreement when obtaining her Eftpos card – which said no obvious numbers should be used in pin numbers – but she didn't read the small print.
