Emergency hotline for deaf

The world's first emergency call service for text communication devices, used by the hearing and speech impaired, has been launched in Australia. The toll free service can be accessed by dialling 106 using a computer with a modem or a text telephone. Communications Minister Richard Alston announced that the service was a joint effort between the Australian Communications Exchange, the Australian Communications Authority and the telecommunications industry.
