Fares hit new low

New domestic airlines Impulse and Virgin Blue have taken the airfare war to new heights this weekend with announcements of cheaper-than-ever fares and more new routes opened up to competition.

Impulse Airlines has announced a range of one-way fares at levels unimaginable a year ago on sale from midnight Saturday including:

Sydney-Melbourne $37
Sydney-Newcastle $19
Melbourne-Hobart $40
Brisbane-Melbourne via Sydney $90

Also on offer is Sydney-Brisbane at $54, Newcastle-Melbourne via Sydney for $90, Hobart-Sydney via Melbourne $77, Canberra- Sydney and Canberra-Melbourne $50, Brisbane-Canberra $100 and Brisbane-Newcastle $120.

The fares are available in either direction on these routes and there are around 4,000 seats available for travel from Monday until April 29.

Meanwhile Virgin has anounced it will begin flying between Melbourne and Adelaide on May 17 with a lowest fare of $89 one-way.
