Feds explore scoping study for Telstra sale

The federal government may begin a scoping study into the sale of its 50.9 per cent stake in Telstra by early 2005, but may not seek to sell the stake before early 2006. The government is expected to send invitations to investment banks to pitch for the scoping work before the end of this year. A scoping study would canvas options for the sale of the government’s controlling stake including how to maximise value, a framework for the sell-down, and any interest Telstra may have in undertaking a buy back of some shares.
