Fines for banks mis-using voting roll
Fines of up to $110,000 and other safeguards would prevent banks from using information gained from electoral rolls for direct mail or marketing purposes, the Federal Government said. The Government is planning to give banks and possibly other financial institutions access to the electoral roll to use as part of their ID checks. The Australian Bankers' Association has lobbied the Government for access so it can verify identities and help prevent fraud. When asked why banks could not use other forms of ID such as drivers' licences, credit cards and passports the ABA said this sort of information is not stored in a national database and thus not quickly accessible.
