Fraud warning for Xmas shoppers

The National Insurance Brokers' Association has warned Australians to be extra vigilant during the Christmas spending period and to be on the look-out for “identity thieves”. NIBA says shoppers should keep track of all receipts, bank statements and other documents containing personal financial details.

Thieves are also targeting mail boxes, stealing personal letters and bills, including utility accounts and credit card statements.
NIBA says there's been a surge of identity theft recently, where people's genuine identification is stolen to make several variations of that ID and used for fraudulent activities.

Consumers should also destroy old bank records, protect PINs and passwords, and report any thefts of credit and ATM cards immediately, NIBA said.
