Grants provide glimmer of hope for home buyers

Thirty thousand first home buyers have taken advantage of the increased first home buyers grant from the federal government says the Minister for Housing Tanya Plibersek.

The Housing Industry Association says about 25 per cent of the grants were going on new homes.

The increased first home owners grant of $14,000 for an existing dwelling or $21,000 for a new home is due to expire on June 30.

The minister declined to say whether it would be extended.
