Increased Medicare rebates

Federal Health Minister Dr Michael Wooldridge will today announce a $300 million increase to Medicare rebates.

The increase in Medicare spending will effectively mean patients who receive treatment from a doctor who does not bulk-bill will be at least $1 better off per visit. The Medicare rebate for a standard consultation (up to 20 minutes) will increase to $24.45 while the rebate for a longer consultation (between 20 and 40 minutes) will be $46.45, up from $42.35.

The new Medicare rebates will come into effect 1 November 2001.
