Lowest Syd-Mel fares tough to find

The best discount fares are never easy to secure but a FlightChoice survey of availability on the prime Sydney-Melbourne route shows it is extra tough.

Competition is intense on this route since Virgin Blue began flying the route last month so we took a look at availability of low fares over the next seven days.

Availability of fares at the lowest prices was very limited as you might expect. Qantas has no $77 fares being promoted on its website which is the only airline that tallies with our availability search – none available over the next seven days. However, there are twenty-three flights showing seats available for $99, as usual available only over the internet

Ansett is quoting internet fares of $77 on its website yet none of these could be found available over the next week. On the next ‘tier', at $99, there is one flight on Wednesday and five flights on Thursday of next week.

Virgin Blue is promoting $77 fares although none are available over the next week. Two flights were found at $134, two flights at $144 and six flights at $154.

Virgin has told FlightChoice that the response to its new Sydney-Melbourne service has been huge with low-price seats sold out weeks ahead. To keep up with demand it is awaiting the arrival of three new planes to add to this route.
