Margin lending getting more popular

The number of margin loans issued in Australia was up 31 per cent in 2005 according to the Reserve Bank. At the end of the year, margin loans were worth a total of $19.9 billion up from $15.2 billion a year earlier. Growth in total personal lending has slowed to ten per cent last year from 15 per cent the year before. Mortgage equity loan growth has slowed significantly from 32 per cent in the twelve months to January 2004, to 6.9 per cent in January 2005.
