Qantas has revealed its plans for the launch of a discount international airline to fly routes to Asia and the Pacific that it is finding unprofitable as a full-service airline.
The new subsidiary, to be called Australian Airlines, is scheduled to begin flying mid next year with new Boeing 767 jets, probably out of Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin and Perth. The destinations earmarked include Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Sapporo and Fukuoka in Japan, and Tahiti.
Qantas maintains the new airline would the same in-flight economy and business class service with costs being kept down in other ares such as selling tickets over the internet.
