New Sydney airport passenger tax

A new tax of $17.55 AUD (excluding GST) per arrival and per departure from Sydney Kingsford Smith International terminal will be in place as of Monday 10 September.

The Passenger Service Charge represents terminal fees, terrorist response charges and screening charges for passengers and baggage. This fee was previously included in ticket prices but the Sydney Airports Corporation Limited received approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commisssion for this tax to be a separate charge.

Passengers will be paying around $75 in taxes to depart and return to Sydney. $38 departure tax, $3.40 noise tax and now the $35 return service charge. Exempt from the charges are passengers in transit who do not clear customs and infants under 2 years.

Passengers need to be aware that when booking a domestic flight certain flights are the beginning or the end of an international flight. You will incurr the nex tax if you are booked on an international flight even though you flying domestically, Qantas flights 1-399 and Ansett flights 800-899 depart from the international terminal and the charge will apply to these flights.

Latest figures from the Federal Department of Transport show 27 million people flew to and from Australia in the year to April. This is a 12 month record and 10 per cent more than the year to April 2000.

In the month of April, 1.413 million people flew to and from Australia, 2.7 per cent higher than April 2000.

The top routes were Sydney-Auckland with an 18 per cent increase and the Sydney-Singapore route is up 23 per cent.

More than 8.4 million passed through Sydney International Airport approximately half of all international paasengers.
