New York yellow taxis go green
In a message that even the biggest cities can go green, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has launched a plan to replace the city's entire cab fleet with environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles over the next five years. The plan will be phased in over a four year period and the full fleet would be hybrid by 2012. In the last two years the city has added 400 hybrid vehicles to its fleet with a further 1,000 to be added by October 2008 under the new proposal. In all there are 13,000 licensed yellow cabs in New York and drivers pay as much as $100 a day to keep the tank full.
