Patients to control online medical records
The Federal Government's plan to set up an e-health record system – which would provide patients, along with medical professionals, access to their medical records – could see consumers own and control their health records in order to be rolled out. The NSW Ministerial Advisory Committee on Privacy and Health Information has raised concern over the confidentiality of medical records in the government's HealthConnect scheme. The committee has recommended that the government set a nation-wide criteria for the e-health records to protect patient ownership of medical records therefore giving the consumer control over which parts of their record are made available to whom. NSW Health Minister Craig Knowles is currently considering the committee's report.
