Possible flight disruptions over Christmas

Qantas maintenance workers have voted overwhelmingly to reject a 12 month wage freeze.

Qantas and unions representing the maintenance workers met in the Industrial Relations Commission on Monday to try and avert industrial action over the Christmas period. After failing to come to an agreement the unions offered Qantas the option of private arbitration. Qantas has rejected that offer which further angered unions and subsequently increased the likelihood of industrial action over the Christmas period.

With Qantas controlling over 80 per cent of the domestic market industrial action by the maintenance workers could cause chaos for travellers over Christmas. Qantas states that they have contingency plans in place if workers strike and have ensured travellers that flights will not be disrupted.

Qantas and the unions go before the Industrial Relations Commission again on Friday.
