Qantas confirms card surcharge

Qantas has confirmed it intends to introduce a surcharge on credit card transactions, despite the Assistant Treasurer Helen Coonan telling Parliament she did not believe the airline would do so.

A Qantas spokesman confirmed that a 1 per cent levy on all credit card transactions will be introduced on July 1. Its introduction was delayed following discussions with the Treasurer, Peter Costello. The airline claims the surcharge will recover less than 50 per cent of the annual credit card fees charged by merchants. If Qantas customers wish to avoid the surcharge, they can do so by paying for their flight tickets by cheque or cash through travel agents.
