Qantas swings the axe as fuel prices soar

Qantas said it may increase the fuel surcharge a third time this year to cope with rising oil prices. Qantas also said it was looking for ways to further reduce non-fuel unit costs by five per cent annually. Qantas took a step toward the latter goal by sacking 200 middle managers. The airline’s fuel bill is set to blow out by $1.2 billion this year.
