Share ownership falls

According to an ASX survey, Australia's love affair with the sharemarket appears to have plateaued after strong growth following listings by Telstra, NRMA and AMP. Share owning Australians fell from 54% to 52%, which includes both direct holdings and indirect holdings via managed funds.

While the lack of large company listings and a volatile equities market during 2000 would have curtailed growth in these figures, Australia still has a high level of share ownership compared with other countries.
