Thousands of workers miss out on free $$$

Two hundred and seventy thousand eligible taxpayers missed out on their federal government economic stimulus payments because they failed to lodge a tax return for the last financial year.

Taxpayers who worked and lodged a tax return in Australia in the financial year 2007 – 2008 were eligible for payments of $900. Other rounds of payments included cash handouts for children, carers and pensioners.

The government faced accusations of using the stimulus payments as a political pork-barrelling exercise.
