Top five banks reap $36 million a day

Australia's five largest banks earned $36 million a day in profits during the first six months of the 2003-04 financial year, up from $27 million a day the previous year. National Australia Bank, Westpac, the Commonwealth, ANZ and St George had total combined profits of $6.5 billion for the half year, more than 30 per cent higher than the previous corresponding period's $5 billion.
