Westpac denies nine-day Net outage

Westpac has denied that its DeskBank online banking tool has been down since March 28th, saying that a very large file before Easter caused a delay in the processing of some transactions but it was fixed within a day.

A further problem last Wednesday, said by a Westpac spokeswoman to be a “hardware problem and end-of-the month congestion”, saw “some customers experiencing some congestion”. Users, however, say that DeskBank has been consistently unavailable since last Thursday and that Westpac is aware of the problem, telling one user that “it's been meaning to inform customers”.

DeskBank is a transaction tool used by medium-sized organisations to process EFT payments such as online payrolls, welfare, and tax payments to the ATO. The glitch on March 28th caused delays for thousands of customers' welfare payments.

A DeskBank customer said that his company and others that he knows of are in negotiations with other banks to move their accounts, as they can't be refused access to such a critical application. The Westpac spokeswoman said that the bank is in the process of implementing a fix for the problem but she couldn't give a time-frame for its solution.
