Don’t mourn the end of the airfare war – its not over yet

News Alert : Wednesday 2 / 5 / 01

Leading consumer infomediary believes low discount airfares enjoyed over the last eight months will continue despite Impulse Airlines being subsumed by Qantas.

And air travellers should also be aware that Impulse is not dead yet – there are still bargains to be had for travel over coming months.

InfoChoice travel commentator Cassandra Emery said: “While the super-low fares, such as $32 one-way Sydney-Melbourne seen over recent months, are now likely a thing of the past consumers should not think fares will return to high pre-competition levels.

“We believe one-way fares on major capital city routes will continue to be available for around $100, with occasional offers as low as $70,” Ms Emery said.

“There are still three airlines competing in the Australian domestic market and if anything, Impulse's demise strengthens the hand of Virgin Blue.”

Virgin Blue has assured InfoChoice within the last 24 hours it remains as determined as ever to succeed as a low-fare operator on Australian domestic routes – the airline has just announced it will begin a new service, Sydney to Coolangatta, on June 17.

InfoChoice, via its FlightChoice comparison website, will continue to monitor the health of airfare competition closely, showing the best discount and full economy fares available day by day.

Meanwhile, InfoChoice investigations reveal that passengers still have a window of opportunity to take advantage of low fares on offer from Impulse.

Qantas has promised to honour all tickets bought from Impulse and currently one-way fares can still be booked on Impulse's website as low as $65 Sydney-Brisbane, $72 Sydney-Melbourne and $72 Melbourne-Hobart.

“These fares are available now for travel up until December – but clearly they won't last,” Ms Emery said.

Consumers can access the online booking pages of each of the four domestic airlines through FlightChoice at .
