InfoChoice Rent Crisis Survey - January 2024

Australian renters have endured one of the most challenging years in this nation’s history, with 2023 characterised by steep rent increases and record-low vacancy rates. To help gain a deeper understanding of the real issues faced by tenants and to assess the severity of the situation, InfoChoice recently surveyed more than 1,000 renters of all ages throughout Australia.

Key findings

70% are spending more than 30% of their gross income on rent - the common definition of being in rental stress

41.2% of renters have seen their rents rise by 10% or more in the last 12 months

96.2% believe the government should do more to help renters

37.4% believe they will never afford to buy a home
