History of interest rate movements

 

The graph below shows how official interest rates and the standard variable home loan rate offered by the banks have moved since 2000. Variable rates largely track the movement of official interest rates with a traditional margin of around 1.8 percentage points. In February 2008, the banks started moving their rates independent of the RBA cash rate and as such the margin has slowly edged further apart. It now stands at 3.05 percentage points.
