Right as airfares start to normalise and travellers look to take advantage of the Northern Hemisphere’s summer, Bankwest’s popular product has been nerfed.

In a letter to customers dated 10 June, Bankwest outlined the changes: If a traveller’s departure date is before 3 September, they will still be covered. If after, they will not.

If customers have purchased an upgrade to the base travel insurance premium, they will remain covered, including any travel that takes place after 3 September.

The policy, a white-labelled CoverMore product underwritten by Zurich, was fairly comprehensive for a complimentary credit card feature.

It included coverage for riskier activities like snow sports, as well as up to 31 days’ consecutive coverage.

For many it was a go-to choice when travelling overseas, with zero foreign transaction fees (usually about 3%) coming in handy.

While it doesn’t offer points or lounge access, the Zero Platinum product bears no annual fee, and a lower-than-normal purchase rate of 14.99% p.a. with an interest-free period of 55 days.

Bankwest retains these features.

The brand also has a range of other credit cards with complimentary travel insurance, however these likely incur an annual fee.

Other credit card products with no annual fee, complimentary travel insurance and zero foreign transaction fees include:

  • Bendigo Bank Ready Mastercard
  • ING Orange One Low Rate Visa

Commonwealth Bank also has a host of travel-friendly credit cards with no annual fee provided a minimum monthly spend is met.

Customers are encouraged to check the individual product details for interest rates, credit limits, insurance coverage, and other terms and conditions.
