Skills shortage impacts on housing
The housing industry faces a severe shortage of labour with 4,000 apprentices leaving the industry during the financial crisis and fewer people were taking up a career in any of the critical trades. The industry will be short about 65,000 skilled workers by 2012 says the housing industry association.
About 190,000 dwellings a year are required to e built to meet underlying demand for housing, according to HIA managing director Shane Goodwin. He said the residential construction industry was almost certainly going to face a skills crunch.
