Up up and away, travel on the rise

According to statistics from Avstat (the Department of Transport's aviation monitoring unit), domestic travel has increased substantially. A recent Avstat study on domestic airline activity for the month of September, indicated that increased competition in the domestic arena – brought about by the entrance of Impulse Airlines and Virgin Blue – has seen an increase in travel within Australia. In particular, Melbourne-Sydney, Brisbane-Sydney and Brisbane-Melbourne routes, up 24.4, 35.3 and 16.4 per cent respectively. Passenger numbers on these routes jumped by 26.5 per cent in comparison to September 1999.
