Credit cards that charge zero per cent interest on purchases

The credit card market is under pressure as shoppers and other consumers find alternatives to high-interest, high-fee credit cards.

Banks and other credit card issuers are responding with great credit card offers and lower credit card rates and fees. Competitive credit card deals ae available from the big banks and smaller institutions like credit unions as well.

Balance transfer offers featuring a zero per cent (0% pa) interest rate on balances transferred to the card at the time of approval have been common in Australia for many years. A newer development in the credit card market is credit card offering zero per cent (0% pa) on purchases for a limited honeymoon period. That period can be as long as one year or more.

The following credit cards have 0% pa purchase rate offers and are listed on InfoChoice. You can compare these credit cards with other credit cards from Australia’s banks and other card issuers at InfoChoice.

National Australia Bank’s NAB Low Rate Platinum Visa credit card has a current offer featuring a 0% p.a. rate on purchases for 15 months. The NAB Low Rate Platinum Card is also offering 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 15 months with a one off 2% Balance Transfer fee. Unpaid balances revert to Cash Advance Rate, currently 21.74% pa. This card also offers a 24/7 Platinum Concierge Service, access to seven complimentary insurances including Overseas Travel Insurance, access to the 24/7 NAB Service Centre and up to 44 days interest free on purchases while you have a balance transfer.

Suncorp’s Clear Options Platinum Visa credit card is offering a 0% pa rate on purchases (and balance transfers) for the first 14 months after card approval. Balance transfers revert to the cash advance rate after 14 months which is currently 21.99% p.a. Apply for this card before the end of March 2020 to pay an annual fee of $49 in the first year (usually $129).

The Suncorp Clear Options Platinum Visa credit card also comes with complimentary international travel insurance for the cardholder and immediate family and Purchase Cover Insurance for lost, stolen or damaged goods.

Virgin Money Australia’s Velocity Flyer Visa credit card has a 0% pa rate for 14 months on purchases and charges an annual fee in the first year of $64, reverting to $129 after that.

The Virgin Velocity Flyer Visa credit card also is promoting a $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher giveaway. Cardholders get the voucher each year. The Virgin Velocity Flyer Visa comes with up to 55 days interest-free, then a purchase interest rate of 20.74 per cent pa.

Commonwealth Bank is offering a 0% pa rate on purchases for the first 15 months after card approval on their Low Fee Gold Mastercard credit card and their Low Rate Gold Mastercard credit cards. Apply by 29 February 2020 to collect this offer (terms and conditions apply).

This card is not offering a 0% pa rate on purchases, but a low ongoing purchase rate plus a 0% pa rate for 26 months on balance transfers:

The Bankwest Breeze MasterCard credit card is promoting a 0% p.a. rate for 26 months on balance transfers with a 2% BT fee.  The Bankwest Breeze MasterCard charges a discounted annual fee of $39 in the first year, reverting to $79 later. This card features a low interest rate on purchases of 12.99 per cent pa with up to 55 days interest-free.
