Bendigo Bank heading north

Bendigo Bank is certainly on a winner with its bush banking strategy; the one where the community takes on ownership of the branch.

Having already stated its intention to branch out into South and West Australia, there are now plans to head to Queensland.

At this stage talks are at a “very embryonic stage” according to Bendigo Bank managing director Rob Hunt. But with the initial interest coming from the Queensland Government it would seem that, provided they come up with an economical venture, things should proceed.

Let’s hope that any of these branches which may open, have more success than the marginal government sponsored credit unions in the rural areas, which, according to Queensland Treasurer David Hamill, may have to close if GST exemptions are not given to them.
