Card fraudsters target Adelaide
Visa International has warned credit cardholders to literally not let their cards out of their sight as “skimming” fraudsters turn their attention to Adelaide following arrests in Sydney.
Visa has briefed South Australian police on the growth of skimming which accounts for 99 per cent of counterfeiting activities. The company said it has recorded a huge growth in counterfeit credit cards in SA over the past six months.
Visa's risk manager said the easiest way to avoid becoming a victim is to never let your card out of your sight. At restaurants and other public places, take your card to the register yourself and watch out for staff swiping your card through a second device, particularly if it's small and hand-held. Losses incurred through skimming are not, however, carried by cardholders but by the banks.
