Credit card users win with new taxi payment rules

Consumers using their credit or debit card to pay for taxi fares are enjoying the lower card surcharge fees that have been set by new regulations. Previously Cabcharge, the taxi payments processing company, charged passengers 10 per cent to pay with a card.

In Western Australia and New South Wales these fees are now capped at five per cent, catching up with a limit already introduced in Victoria.

And it seems that affiliated taxi operators are making more use of rival payment processing systems, with fares processed by Cabcharge up only or 0.3 per cent in the last year.
