Text messaging comes to public phones

Telstra has announced plans to enable public payphones with the SMS text messaging service on every pay phone in Australia, beginning in July.

A trial has been conducted in Perth on 800 pay phones. During the trial, about 300 text messages a day were sent using the payphones.

It is unreported what the cost will be to send an SMS message from the payphones to mobile phones. Carriers charge 20 cents for an SMS message from a subscriber's mobile while the cost of a public phone voice call is 40 cents.
